A long-standing, iconic band on the Austin scene, AFROFREQUE is known for their high-energy live performances and tightly-arranged, dance-inducing compositions. The band's music is a delectable combination of soulful hip-hop, sprinkled with funk, afrobeat and reggae. The grooves are funky, the lyrics are positive and conscious, reflecting hip-hop culture, social issues and just plain having fun. The group comprises an experienced tribe of musicians that perform with a who's-who of Austin artists and have been long-time staples in the city's music firmament: MC Tigre Liu; keyboardist Claude McCan (Raggamassive, Pressure, Claude9, 35MM,..); guitarist Fumi Sugawara (Bruce James, 35MM, Cilantro Boombox,... ); drummer Michael Hale (Tameca Jones, Michael Hale Trio, ...); bassist John Siegenthaler; and DJ Resinthol. The band members have also been integral parts of other bands such as The Killer Bees, Big Game Hunter, Dirty Wormz, Patrice Pike, David Garza, Laura Scarborough, Futurelight Sound System, and Shantytown Underground.
In 2016, Austin Mayor Steve Adler declared March 31 as the city's annual AFROFREQUE DAY.
